MegaBox myth busting: WEIGHT TRAINING WILL MAKE YOU BULKY

We have probably all heard or potentially been convinced for some reason or another that performing weight training, particularly for women, will result in an unwanted ‘bulky’ appearance which can often prevent many women from starting some form of resistance exercise. This is simply not the case for the vast majority of the general population and in reality resistance training, done consistently, has a multitude of benefits and will not result in transforming you into the Incredible Hulk!

From a general population standpoint the reality of us staying consistent for weeks, months, years at a time is slim because normal life gets in the way! Work, holidays, kids, injury … so many factors can stop you from always making it to your training sessions but the thing to do is not beat yourself up about it because external factors can’t always be in your control.
To have the level of commitment that bodybuilders do to their training is all about mindset and the vast majority of people prefer to have a balance between training to keep themselves in shape all whilst letting themselves enjoy life which in our personal opinion is the best way to be! At the end of the day we don’t all need to be professional athletes; we just need to try and stay as healthy as possible, find what type of exercise we enjoy doing and know that it is okay for life to get in the way!

Weight training is integral for building muscle and when combined with a good diet with enough protein to complement the training we will see results. However, there are many factors that will determine these results such as the frequency and intensity of our training, how many sets and reps we complete and the amount of weight we use. All of which will provide different adaptations but most importantly will take time to achieve! So, when we see bodybuilders and think we don't want to get an extreme figure like that by lifting weights we need to remember that, first of all they are training specifically to get that amount of muscle mass and second of all it will have taken them years and years of consistent, specific training to get to that point.

What will actually happen when we implement weight training into our weekly routines (in particular at MegaBox Fitness!!)?

  • Prevention of injuries

  • Improvements in strength*

  • Increased muscle mass and definition*

*how much will be determined by weight, reps frequency, intensity and diet

  • Increase in bone density, giving us stronger and more durable bones

  • Reduce unwanted body fat

  • Improve confidence

  • Improve body composition / the shape of our body

  • Improves mood and relieve stress

If you have any questions on how to get started with weight training and what you need to be doing to achieve the results you want then we are more than happy to provide further guidance at MegaBox!
